Chenari is one of Bihar's major reserved constituencies for Scheduled Castes in the Rohtas district. It comprises the blocks of Chenari, Rohtas and Nauhatta, along with select gram panchayats from Shivsagar.
The constituency falls under the Sasaram Lok Sabha seat and has remained politically significant because of its swing voting patterns and history of close contests.
The Chenari Assembly Election 2025 will be held on November 11, 2025, in Phase 2 of the Bihar polls. The votes are to be counted on November 14, 2025. The electoral fight for Chenari will indeed be a tough battle given the political realignments happening ahead of these assembly elections.
In the 2020 Assembly elections, Murari Prasad Gautam of Congress defeated JD(U)’s Lalan Paswan by 18,003 votes. The LJP had also made its presence felt by fielding Chandra Shekhar Paswan, whose votes nearly matched JD(U)’s losing margin, splitting the NDA vote. In 2024, Gautam switched to the BJP, strengthening the party’s local base even as Congress retained its lead in Chenari during the Lok Sabha polls.
Voting will take place between 7:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. with adequate arrangements for security and EVM monitoring at all the rural polling stations to ensure smooth and fair polling.
According to the 2011 Census, Chenari tehsil had a population of 303,618. It has a sex ratio of 920 females for every 1,000 males. The literacy rate stands at 70.8 percent. Languages usually spoken are Bhojpuri, Hindi, and Urdu, indicating the cultural diversity of the area.
During the 2020 Bihar Assembly elections, the Chenari assembly constituency had approximately 303,618 registered voters, while this number rose to 315,790 in the Lok Sabha elections of 2024. Of these, Scheduled Castes comprised 22.16 percent, Scheduled Tribes 4.87 percent, and Muslims around 9.5 percent of the electorate.
The Chenari Assembly Constituency was established in 1962 with the seat being a bastion for socialist and centrist politics. This constituency has seen over 16 elections in which Congress and various socialist parties have won alternatively. With changed loyalties and Gautam's entry into the BJP, the 2025 elections may rewrite Chenari's politics, making it one of the keenly watched contests in Bihar.
