Bihar’s New Government Set for Swearing-In on November 19 or 20 at Gandhi Maidan

The political gears are spinning rapidly in Bihar as the state prepares for a fresh start. Following a commanding performance in the recent Assembly elections, the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) is not wasting any time.

 With its decisive majority officially secured, the coalition is moving swiftly to formalize its power, scheduling the swearing-in ceremony as early as November 19 or 20. This quick transition marks the start of a new term for the ruling alliance.

The timing of the oath-taking ceremony, which is being planned on a grand scale at Patna’s Gandhi Maidan, is reportedly being coordinated to fit the schedule of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who is expected to attend along with chief ministers from various BJP-ruled states.

Official Result of the 18th Bihar Assembly

The Election Commission is set to hand over the official results of the 18th Bihar Assembly elections to Governor Rajendra Arlekar. 

Once this happens, the official notification for the new Assembly will be issued, and the Model Code of Conduct the set of rules enforced during the election period will be formally lifted.

Following this, the incumbent Chief Minister, Nitish Kumar, has called a cabinet meeting for Monday. The main item on the agenda will be to approve the dissolution of the outgoing 17th Assembly.

After this meeting, Kumar is scheduled to visit the Raj Bhavan to officially submit his resignation to the Governor, clearing the path for the new government to take charge.

The Mandate and the Majority

The election results cemented a strong mandate for the NDA. The coalition easily crossed the majority mark in the 243-member Assembly.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) emerged as the single largest party, securing 89 seats. Closely following was Chief Minister Nitish Kumar’s Janata Dal (United) (JD(U)) with 85 seats. Key allies like the LJP (Ramvilas) added 19 seats, while HAM (Secular) won 5 and Rashtriya Lok Morcha took 4, showcasing a united front. In sharp contrast, the opposition Mahagathbandhan managed to secure only 35 seats, making the NDA’s victory an undeniable landslide.
