Trump’s campaign spokesperson, Steven Cheung, also confirmed the meeting would take place soon and expressed appreciation for the call.
“President Joe Biden called President-elect Donald J. Trump to congratulate him on his victory and extended an invitation to the White House to ensure a smooth transition between the current Administration and the incoming Administration,” Cheung said. “President Trump looks forward to the meeting, which will take place shortly, and very much appreciated the call,” he added.
President Biden also called Vice President Kamala Harris to congratulate her on leading a “historic campaign.” In a statement following Harris’s concession speech, Biden praised her integrity, courage, and leadership. He acknowledged the extraordinary circumstances under which Harris ran and emphasized how she embodied the potential for a more just and free America.
“Under extraordinary circumstances, she stepped up and led a historic campaign that embodied what’s possible when guided by a strong moral compass and a clear vision for a nation that is freer, more just, and full of more opportunities for all Americans,” Biden said.
He reiterated that choosing Harris as his running mate was his “best decision,” and he expressed confidence that she would continue making a significant impact. “Her story represents the best of America’s story. And as she made clear today, I have no doubt that she’ll continue writing that story,” Biden stated. He added that Harris would continue to fight for all Americans, serving as a role model for future generations.
Vice President Harris and President-elect Trump also held a phone conversation on Wednesday. Harris congratulated Trump on his win and assured him that she and Biden would work together for a peaceful transfer of power. This conversation comes in contrast to Trump’s refusal to concede the 2020 presidential election after losing to President Biden.
