Children from Jigme Lasol Primary School gathered along the streets to greet the arrival of Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Thimphu, the capital of Bhutan. The visuals captured the excitement of the school kids, who held Bhutanese and Indian flags, eagerly awaiting a glimpse of PM Modi. One student expressed gratitude towards India for its support, noting PM Modi’s assistance during times of need, particularly mentioning the provision of vaccines. Another student conveyed appreciation for PM Modi’s visit, recognizing it as a significant event for Bhutan. Residents of Thimphu echoed similar sentiments, expressing confidence that PM Modi’s visit would further strengthen the relationship between Bhutan and India. They eagerly awaited his arrival, with schools closing for the day as students lined up along the express highway to welcome him.

PM Modi received a warm reception upon his arrival at Paro International Airport, where he was greeted by Bhutanese Prime Minister Tshering Tongay with a tight hug. Subsequently, PM Modi was honored with a grand guard of honor by the Bhutanese armed forces. His visit, scheduled from March 22-23, signifies the enduring bond between the two nations, characterized by mutual trust and goodwill. Elaborate preparations were made at the airport to welcome PM Modi, with posters and decorations reflecting Bhutanese culture. Enhanced security measures were also in place to ensure his safe arrival.

During his visit, PM Modi will participate in various programs aimed at strengthening the bilateral partnership between India and Bhutan. The longstanding relationship between the two countries dates back to the establishment of formal diplomatic ties in 1968, with significant milestones including the Treaty of Friendship and Cooperation signed in 1949. High-level exchanges, including visits by King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck to India and PM Modi’s previous visit to Bhutan in August 2019, have played a pivotal role in fostering economic cooperation and connectivity. The recent official visit of Bhutanese Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay to India in March 2024 further underscores the commitment of both nations to enhancing bilateral relations across various sectors, including development cooperation and economic ties.
