A 30-year-old man hanged himself in the early hours of Saturday in the Sarangarh-Bilaigarh district of Chhattisgarh after hacking to death a woman and her family members, including a five-year-old son, for rejecting his marriage proposal.
The incident took place in Thargaon village. The accused has been identified as Manoj Sahu. The victims are Hemlal Sahu (55), his wife Jagmoti Sahu (50), their daughters Meera Sahu (30) and Mamta Sahu (35), and Meera’s son Ayush (5).
Manoj, a tailor, scaled the boundary wall of the family’s house at night when they were asleep. He allegedly killed Hemlal first, who was sleeping in the hall, then Mamta, who was sleeping in a bedroom, and Meera, who was sleeping with her son, Ayush. He then hanged himself in another room.
When a relative attempted to contact the family on Saturday morning but got no response, the situation became apparent. After that, the neighbor called to see how the family was doing.
Earlier, after Meera refused his marriage proposal, an infuriated Manoj had assaulted Meera and her sister.
“In 2017, Meera had filed a complaint against Manoj for trespassing and assault and an FIR was lodged. The trial in the case is underway,” Superintendent of Police Pushkar Sharma told The Indian Express. It was learnt that the FIR and the trial against him was hindering Manoj’s marriage prospects.
