Google Photos is introducing a new feature aimed at improving how users track and engage with changes in their shared albums. The newly launched ‘Updates’ section, currently rolling out on both Android and iOS, allows users to stay up-to-date with activity in shared albums and conversations for a more organized experience, according to The Verge.
The ‘Updates’ section replaces the old sharing button that previously allowed users to share albums. Now, as reported by The Verge, users will see a bell icon that takes them to a feed of recent notifications. According to Google, this feature is designed to help users better follow updates to shared albums, comments, and group conversations within the Google Photos app.
Organized chronologically, the ‘Updates’ page allows users to filter events by time periods like “today,” “yesterday,” “this week,” “this month,” or “last month.” This timeline provides clear and easy-to-read notifications about new changes or actions within shared albums and conversations, as noted by The Verge.

A Google support post mentions, “We want to streamline how you can view recent activity with an interface that makes albums, groups, and conversations more accessible.” The addition aims to offer greater transparency and control, especially for users collaborating on albums or group chats within Google Photos.
In addition to the ‘Updates’ section, users can now access their shared albums from the new ‘Collections’ section, creating a central location for managing all albums, both personal and shared. This makes it easier to navigate through photos and collaborations with friends, family, or colleagues.
While the feature is currently rolling out, availability may vary by region and device. Users who don’t yet see the ‘Updates’ section are advised to check back “over the coming weeks” as the rollout progresses. As The Verge notes, the ‘Updates’ section is already available on both Android and iOS Google Photos apps, though some users may not have access to it immediately.
