Dream Track: YouTube Tests AI-Powered Music Remixes

YouTube is delving into the future of music remixing with a new AI-powered feature that allows creators to “restyle” licensed songs specifically for their Shorts. This feature, called ‘Dream Track,’ is currently in a limited trial phase and enables creators to use artificial intelligence to alter various aspects of a song, such as its mood, genre, and tempo, according to The Verge.

With ‘Dream Track,’ users can enter a prompt to guide the AI-driven restyling process, which then generates a unique 30-second remix for use in YouTube Shorts. At present, the feature is being tested by a select group of creators invited to participate in the experiment.

To try out ‘Dream Track,’ creators choose an eligible song, describe how they wish to transform it, and the AI produces the modified track. Remixed soundtracks are clearly attributed to the original song and marked with a note indicating they were altered using AI.

YouTube has highlighted that the ‘Dream Track’ experiment includes only music from artists who have agreed to have their voices used by AI. Artists participating in the trial include Charlie Puth, Charli XCX, Demi Lovato, and John Legend. However, details remain unclear on which specific songs are available for remixing and which music labels YouTube has partnered with to support the project.

The introduction of ‘Dream Track’ aligns with YouTube’s larger effort to expand creative tools on its platform, particularly for Shorts creators—a format that has witnessed substantial growth, as reported by The Verge. By harnessing AI, YouTube aims to offer users increased flexibility in their interaction with music, enabling the creation of personalized soundtracks that reflect their unique creative visions.

Reports from June, obtained by The Verge, indicated that YouTube was in discussions with major music labels to secure permission for using their songs in AI training. This development could potentially enable a wider rollout of AI-driven music customization tools, further transforming how users engage with music on the platform.

While still in its testing phase, ‘Dream Track’ provides an early look at the future of AI-assisted music creation, offering creators the opportunity to blend original works with fresh, AI-enhanced twists, potentially giving rise to a new genre of user-generated music content.
