Pakistan Formally Seeks BRICS Membership, Confirmed by Official Statement

Pakistan has officially submitted its application to join the prestigious BRICS alliance, a coalition of influential developing nations, as confirmed by Mumtaz Zahra Baloch, the spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA), during a press briefing in Islamabad on Thursday.

Baloch revealed that the decision to seek BRICS membership came after a thorough review of events at the alliance’s summit in Johannesburg. Baloch expressed optimism that BRICS would evaluate and consider Pakistan’s request in accordance with its commitment to inclusivity, citing Pakistan’s potential to significantly contribute to international cooperation and foster inclusive multilateralism.

Underscoring Pakistan’s amicable ties with existing BRICS members, Baloch emphasized the nation’s dedication to multilateralism and its active participation in various international organizations. She also underscored Pakistan’s crucial role in promoting global peace and development.

Addressing concerns about security threats stemming from Afghanistan, Baloch urged prompt action by Afghan authorities against terrorist entities to preempt any potential threat to Pakistan. Additionally, she reiterated Pakistan’s backing for an international peace conference addressing the Palestinian question, stressing the implementation of relevant UN resolutions for a two-state solution.

It is noteworthy that Argentina, Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates have received invitations to join the BRICS. Their official induction into the alliance, alongside current members Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, is scheduled to take effect on January 1, 2024, during Moscow’s rotating presidency at the summit in Russia. Pakistan’s potential entry into the BRICS signals a significant geopolitical shift and an opportunity to influence global decision-making.
