Earthquake affected in Afghanistan’s Gayan district continue to remain homeless

The Gayan district in the southeast of the Paktika province of Afghanistan is still home to people who lost their houses in the earthquake that struck there last year, according to TOLO News. The catastrophic 6.1-magnitude earthquake that struck the area in June 2022 is thought to have destroyed nearly 7,000 buildings and widely damaged many more.
850 homes have already undergone repairs, while more than 3,000 homes are still unfinished. Over 2,700 buildings are still under construction, with plans to start work on 800 homes in the near future, according to TOLO News.
“I am asking the organizations to take action before the arrival of winter, otherwise if we face heavy rain, it will be difficult for us,” said Zarif Jan, another Gayan resident.
In addition to building shelters, people living in the Gayan Paktika district have urged the government to focus on building roads, health facilities, and other aspects of their life.
Since the Taliban seized power in Afghanistan, the country’s economic situation has deteriorated. The Afghans have repeatedly complained of lack of basic amenities under the interim government and the country is now heavily dependent on humanitarian aid.
