The Atal Tunnel, also referred to as the Rohtang Tunnel, situated in Himachal Pradesh, experienced a fresh layer of snowfall on Saturday. Recognized as an engineering marvel amidst the Himalayas, this tunnel traverses beneath the Rohtang Pass within the eastern Pir Panjal range. Positioned on the Leh-Manali Highway within Himachal Pradesh, India, it holds the distinction of being the lengthiest single-tube highway tunnel situated at an altitude surpassing 10,000 feet, according to information provided on the Border Roads Organisation’s official website.
Meanwhile, on Saturday, the Himachal Pradesh Traffic, Tourist, and Railways Police shared a traffic advisory for Lahaul and Spiti districts. The update highlighted heavy snowfall around the South Portal area, indicating that the road from the South Portal to Solang Nallah is unsuitable for any form of traffic.
This advisory came subsequent to the occurrence of fresh snowfall in the upper regions of Himachal Pradesh on Saturday morning. Previously, the Indian Meteorological Department had issued an orange alert for specific districts in Himachal Pradesh, including Chamba, Kangra, Kullu, Mandi, Shimla, Solan, and certain parts of Lahaul-Spiti. The alert cautioned about anticipated snowfall and rainfall for a three-day duration starting from March 28.
