The Raisingh Nagar assembly seat in Sri Ganganagar district is considered quite important in the state’s politics. Currently, the BJP holds control over the Raisingh Nagar Vidhan Sabha seat. In 2018, Balveer Singh Luthra of the BJP had a significant victory. Luthra defeated the candidate from CPI(M), Shyopat Ram Meghwal. Luthra, who left his job at the bank to enter politics, contested his first election in 2013 but lost.
Speaking of the political history of this assembly seat, in 2013, Sonadevi Bawri of the Jamindara Party had secured a win. Sonadevi Bawri received 65,782 votes, defeating Balveer Singh Luthra of the BJP, who received 44,544 votes. Meanwhile, the Congress candidate Sohan Nayak secured the third position with 44,229 votes. Before that, in the 2008 election, the Congress candidate Daulat Raj had won with 66,261 votes, defeating the BJP’s Nihal Chand, who received 61,219 votes.
In the legislative assembly constituency, MLA Balveer Singh Luthra, elected from this seat, has undertaken various development works in his tenure of five years. He spent approximately 19 crores and 25 lakhs on development projects from his MLA fund. He also recommended and got approximately Rs 60 crore from the state government for road construction, including the tarmacking of 70 kilometres of roads and the construction of link roads.
Local residents say that the MLA couldn’t complete several works due to the absence of his party’s government. For some of these projects, it is said that they will be executed once the government is in place.
In terms of the caste dynamics in the area, the Naayak voters are around 32,000, while Meghwal voters are around 30,000, and Bawri voters are around 25,000. The Majhabi community has 15,000 voters, the Ramdasia community has 3,000 voters, and Mochi voters are about 5,000. Additionally, there are approximately 5,000 Dhanka voters, 5,000 Valmiki voters, and 50,000 Punjabi voters. The Jat community has 30,000 voters, Bishnoi voters are around 25,000, Kumhar voters are 8,000, and Suthar voters are about 5,000. There are around 10,000 Brahmin voters, 2,000 Rajput voters, and 15,000 Agarwal voters.
In the upcoming legislative assembly election, both the Congress and the BJP are putting significant efforts into winning this seat. While the BJP aims to retain control, the Congress seeks to establish its presence here. It remains to be seen who emerges victorious in the political battle this time.
