CHANDIGARH: City Police in Gurdaspur have pressed charges against an individual for assaulting the superintendent of the Central Jail Gurdaspur. The accused, identified as Sanjay Kumar alias Sajan Nayyar, son of Vijay Kumar and resident of Haripur Gate Hakima Amritsar, faced legal action under sections 353, 186, 511, and 42 of the Jail Act.

The incident unfolded after Nayyar was transferred from Central Jail Ferozepur to Gurdaspur Jail. Upon his arrival, police officers escorted him to the jail, where he was brought before the jail superintendent around 2:00 PM after reaching the facility at approximately 1:40 PM.

Upon entering the superintendent’s office, Nayyar allegedly engaged in a physical altercation, wielding a chair and a pan in an attempt to attack the superintendent. Despite the chaos that ensued, jail staff managed to restrain Nayyar before he could inflict harm on the superintendent, who narrowly escaped unharmed.

Assistant Sub-Inspector Harjinder Singh, stationed at the City Police Station, confirmed that charges were filed against Nayyar based on a formal complaint lodged by the jail superintendent. Legal proceedings are underway, with authorities seeking a protection warrant from the court to facilitate further investigation and interrogation of the accused.

This incident highlights the importance of maintaining security and order within correctional facilities, with law enforcement agencies swiftly responding to instances of violence or misconduct to ensure the safety of personnel and inmates alike.
