The Railway Protection Force (RPF) of the Northeast Frontier Railway has intensified its crackdown on the smuggling of illegal goods, seizing contraband worth over Rs 23.50 crore between January and August this year, officials said on Saturday.

In a statement, the Chief Public Relations Officer (CPRO) of the Northeast Frontier Railway highlighted the scale of the operation. “During this period, RPF also apprehended 283 peddlers for illegal carrying of contraband goods,” the CPRO noted, emphasizing the force’s ongoing efforts to tackle smuggling on trains.

A notable operation took place on September 2 at Lumding railway station, where the RPF and the Government Railway Police (GRP) conducted a joint inspection of the Agartala-Rani Kamalapati Express (train no. 01666). During the search, four individuals were taken into custody for possessing illegal drugs.

“During checking, they apprehended four persons and recovered 19.7 grams of Brown Sugar worth Rs. 3.94 lakh (approx.) and 18.10 kgs of Ganja worth Rs. 1.81 lakh (approx.) from them,” officials said. The seized contraband had a total estimated value of Rs. 5.75 lakh. The suspects, along with the recovered items, were handed over to local authorities for further legal action.

The RPF’s ongoing efforts have yielded significant results throughout the year. By focusing on intercepting illegal goods being transported via the rail network, they have been able to prevent substantial amounts of contraband from reaching its intended destinations.

These operations are part of a broader effort by railway authorities to ensure safety and security across the railway network, as they continue to dismantle smuggling rings and disrupt illegal activities. The RPF’s commitment to these operations has made a notable impact, both in terms of arrests and the volume of goods recovered.
