Assam: Eight Apprehended in Alleged Gang Rape Case in Guwahati

On the night of 12 December, a video circulated among the residents of Boragaon area of Guwahati in Assam. The gruesome video allegedly depicted a gang rape incident involving a group of youths and a woman. At around 2:30 AM on 13th December, information was received by the Officer in Charge of Gorchuk Police Station in Guwahati from a media person from a regional satellite channel. Based on the video, the police immediately conducted raids at various locations and apprehended 8 youths all within the age groups between 18 to 23.

The arrests came after a disturbing video of the crime surfaced and was brought to the attention of the authorities.

The case came to light in the early hours of the morning when journalist Dharmendra Kalita submitted the video evidence to Inspector Mayurjit Gogoi, Officer-in-Charge of Garchuk Police Station. Acting swiftly, Inspector Gogoi, along with Sub-Inspector Kajal Dutta, launched search operations across the Garchuk and Jalukbari areas.

The arrested individuals, identified from the video, are:

1. Kuldeep Nath (23), Boragaon, Gakhirchowk

2. Bijoy Rabha (22), Boragaon, Shiv Nagar Path

3. Pinku Das (18), Boragaon, Nizarapar

4. Gagan Das (21), Boragaon, Nizarapar

5. Saurav Boro (20), Boragaon, Bakul Nagar

6. Mrinal Rabha (19), Pachim Boragaon, Nizarapar

7. Dipankar Mukhiya (21), Tetelia, Padumbari (Jalukbari)

Deputy Commissioner of Police (West) Padmanabh Baruah confirmed the arrests and provided further details. “Seven individuals are currently in our custody. The incident occurred in the Nizarapar jungle area last month. A suo moto case has been registered, and we are conducting operations to apprehend the remaining absconding individuals,” he said.

The arrested individuals, aged between 18 and 23, were taken into custody early this morning. Authorities have assured that the investigation is being conducted with utmost urgency to ensure justice for the victim.

The identity of the girl is yet to be established. Further investigation is going on.
