Assam BJP president Bhabesh Kalita announced on Monday that 10 members have applied for nominations to fill two vacant Rajya Sabha seats in the state. The names have been forwarded to the central parliamentary committee for the final decision.
After a meeting of the state election committee, Kalita shared that the applicants include former Union minister Rameswar Teli, former MPs Rajdeep Roy and Topon Gogoi, current MLA Manab Deka, and former MLA Mission Ranjan Das. The meeting, attended by Union minister Sarbananda Sonowal, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, and state in-charge Harish Dwivedi, thoroughly discussed the nominations.
The two Rajya Sabha seats became vacant after Sonowal and Kamakhya Tassa were elected to the Lok Sabha. Assam has seven seats in the Upper House, with the BJP-led alliance currently holding six, and one seat held by an Independent MP. Rajya Sabha elections for a total of 12 seats in nine states, including Assam, are scheduled for September 2.
