Tense Standoff at Presidential Residence Over Yoon Suk Yeol Arrest

A dramatic standoff unfolded at the South Korean presidential residence on Wednesday as investigators attempted to arrest impeached President Yoon Suk Yeol. The Corruption Investigation Office for High-Ranking Officials (CIO) and police were met with resistance from the Presidential Security Service (PSS), which set up vehicle barricades to block their entry.

Ruling Party and Legal Team Join Resistance

Adding to the tension, lawmakers from the ruling People Power Party and Yoon’s legal team obstructed investigators at the entrance. The police warned that resisting the execution of search and detention warrants could result in arrest.

Crowds Rally in Support of Yoon

Outside the residence, approximately 6,500 supporters of the impeached president gathered, according to Yonhap News Agency. The police deployed 3,000 officers to manage the situation and ensure law enforcement could proceed.

The Arrest Warrants

The Seoul Western District Court had issued warrants for Yoon Suk Yeol after he ignored three summonses to appear for questioning. These warrants, linked to his failed attempt to impose martial law on December 3, remain valid until January 21.

Background on Yoon’s Impeachment

In December 2024, Yoon Suk Yeol was impeached by the National Assembly for his martial law attempt. The assembly voted 204 to 85 in favor of impeachment, with two-thirds majority required. Following the impeachment vote, Yoon was suspended from office.

What’s Next?

The ongoing standoff highlights the political and legal turmoil in South Korea, as authorities strive to uphold accountability while managing widespread public support for the impeached leader.
