Strong 6.1-Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Nepal, Tremors Felt in Bihar

A powerful earthquake measuring 6.1 on the Richter scale struck Nepal early on Friday. As a result, cities in Bihar, including Patna, Darbhanga, and Madhubani, as well as parts of West Bengal, experienced strong tremors.

Epicenter in Sindhupalchok District

According to the National Earthquake Monitoring and Research Centre, the earthquake hit near Bhairab Kunda in Nepal’s Sindhupalchok district at 2:35 am. Meanwhile, Reuters confirmed both the magnitude and location of the tremor.

Nepal’s High Earthquake Risk

Since Nepal is located in a seismic zone along the Himalayas, it remains highly vulnerable to earthquakes. In fact, in 2015, a devastating 7.8-magnitude quake killed over 9,000 people and damaged more than a million buildings.

People Fled Homes, But No Damage Reported Yet

The tremors were strong enough to wake residents suddenly. Consequently, many people rushed out of their homes in fear. However, as the situation calmed, they returned. “It shook us from our sleep strongly. We rushed out of home. People have now returned back to homes. We have not received any report of damage or injuries so far,” senior Nepali official Ganesh Nepali told Reuters.

For now, authorities continue to monitor the situation for any further developments.
