Russian President Vladimir Putin has assured the safety of Ukrainian troops surrendering in Kursk after a request from U.S. President Donald Trump. Speaking to the Russian Security Council, Putin urged Ukrainian leaders to instruct their forces to lay down arms to prevent further bloodshed.
The appeal came after Trump warned of a looming massacre, claiming thousands of Ukrainian troops were surrounded by Russian forces and in a “very bad and vulnerable position.”
Trump’s Diplomatic Effort
Donald Trump, speaking after a meeting between Putin and his envoy Steve Witkoff, described their discussions as “very good and productive.” He expressed hope that the conflict could soon be over, emphasizing that saving Ukrainian lives was a priority.
On his Truth Social platform, Trump wrote:
“At this very moment, thousands of Ukrainian troops are completely surrounded by the Russian military, and in a very bad and vulnerable position. I have strongly requested to President Putin that their lives be spared. This would be a horrible massacre, one not seen since World War II. God bless them all!”
Zelensky Acknowledges Pressure on Ukrainian Forces
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky admitted that the situation in Kursk remains “very difficult.” However, he also noted that Ukrainian forces stabilized fighting in the Donetsk region, easing pressure on their troops.
Will Putin’s Assurance Lead to a Truce?
While Putin’s promise is seen as a positive diplomatic step, the fate of the Ukrainian troops remains uncertain. With ongoing tensions in Eastern Ukraine, it is yet to be seen if this move will lead to broader peace negotiations.
