M Senthil Thondaman, President of Sri Lanka’s Ceylon Workers’ Congress (CWC), called Prime Minister Narendra Modi an “inspiring figure” during his recent state visit to Sri Lanka. Thondaman expressed his appreciation for PM Modi’s consistent support, especially for the Indian-origin Tamil (IOT) community in Sri Lanka.
Speaking to ANI, Thondaman said,
“PM Modi has fulfilled whatever he committed to Sri Lanka in previous visits. He’s always been an inspiring figure, especially for politicians. His fourth visit has further strengthened the India-Sri Lanka bond.”
He also highlighted India’s ongoing assistance, mentioning how PM Modi has continually shown support not only during times of crisis but also in development efforts, particularly benefiting the IOT community.
India’s Strong Commitment to IOT Community
During his visit, PM Modi met with leaders of the Indian-origin Tamil community and reaffirmed India’s commitment to their development. He announced support for the construction of 10,000 houses, healthcare facilities, renovation of the sacred Seetha Eliya temple, and other key projects in partnership with the Sri Lankan government.
PM Modi posted on X (formerly Twitter):
“The meeting with leaders of Indian Origin Tamil (IOT) was fruitful. The community constitutes a living bridge between the two countries for over 200 years.”
Historic Welcome for PM Modi in Colombo
This marks PM Modi’s first visit to Sri Lanka since 2019 and came at the invitation of President Disanayaka. He was given a historic ceremonial welcome at Colombo’s Independence Square—the first time Sri Lanka has honoured a visiting leader in this manner.
PM Modi arrived in Sri Lanka after attending the BIMSTEC Summit in Thailand, where he held discussions with several global leaders.
His continued diplomatic outreach and commitment to regional harmony have been widely appreciated, both in India and abroad.
