Bangladesh Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus is scheduled to meet Chinese President Xi Jinping on March 28 to discuss key bilateral issues. The meeting is expected to strengthen diplomatic and economic ties between the two nations. A joint statement will be issued following the discussions, as confirmed by the Chief Adviser’s Press Wing.
Strengthening Bilateral Relations
The upcoming visit follows a meeting between Chinese Ambassador Yao Wen and Muhammad Yunus in Dhaka. The ambassador emphasized that this visit would be the most significant in the 50-year relationship between the two “trustworthy” and close partners.
During his trip, Yunus will deliver a speech on “Asia in a Changing World: Towards a Shared Future” alongside China’s Executive Vice Premier.
Participation in Boao Forum & Honorary Doctorate
As part of his visit, Yunus will attend and speak at the Boao Forum, often referred to as the “Davos of the East.” This annual event brings together top global leaders and CEOs to discuss pressing international issues.
Additionally, Peking University—one of the world’s top academic institutions—will confer an honorary doctorate on Yunus. He will also deliver a lecture at the university.
Chinese Investments in Bangladesh
Chinese companies are showing growing interest in Bangladesh’s economic landscape. Longi, the world’s largest solar panel manufacturer, has announced plans to set up an office and invest in solar panel manufacturing in Bangladesh.
Several leading Chinese solar panel manufacturers visited Bangladesh in December 2024 after Muhammad Yunus invited companies to relocate their manufacturing plants. At least two Chinese firms, including Longi, have committed to establishing facilities in the country.
Ambassador Yao Wen highlighted that Chinese companies have been the largest investors in Bangladesh since August 5, following the political transition from the previous government. A dedicated Chinese export processing zone is expected to be operational soon.
Investment in Healthcare Sector
During his discussions, Yunus also urged Chinese hospital chains to invest in Bangladesh’s healthcare sector. He emphasized the need for world-class clinics and joint-venture healthcare facilities to improve the country’s medical infrastructure.
In response, China has allocated four hospitals in Kunming for Bangladeshi patients, with a group of Bangladeshis already traveling there for medical treatment.
Future Prospects
Muhammad Yunus’s visit marks a major step in Bangladesh-China relations, paving the way for new investments and economic cooperation. The discussions are expected to further solidify bilateral trade, healthcare collaborations, and industrial expansion between the two nations.
