Dhaka [Bangladesh]: Former Deputy High Commissioner for Bangladesh to India, Mashfee Binte Shams, lauded the growing economic and cultural partnership between India and Bangladesh. Describing the business ties as “remarkable,” she emphasized the mutual dependency that fosters a symbiotic relationship between the two neighboring countries.
Thriving Trade Relations:
Shams highlighted the robust trade relationship, noting that India is Bangladesh’s largest export destination in Asia, with imports worth around USD 17-18 billion. She added, “This trade volume is significant and reflects the deep interdependence between our economies.”
Shams further explained:
“Sometimes it seems that we in Bangladesh are dependent on Indian imports, but India also benefits significantly from this partnership. The USD 18 billion market in Bangladesh is no small achievement. Both nations stand to gain by nurturing and expanding this relationship.”
Cost-Effective and Beneficial Trade:
According to Shams, importing from India helps Bangladesh save money due to competitive pricing and lower transportation costs. She remarked:
“India’s competitive market benefits both sides. It provides affordable goods to Bangladesh while ensuring Indian exporters receive timely payments with reduced shipping costs.”
People-to-People Connectivity:
The former envoy emphasized the win-win situation in people-to-people ties, particularly in education and healthcare. Many Bangladeshis avail medical treatment and educational opportunities in India, paying for these services while contributing to India’s economy.
Shams stated:
“This is not a one-sided relationship. The education and healthcare Bangladeshis receive in India are paid for, and both sides benefit. Recognizing this mutual gain can strengthen our bond further.”
Strong Foundation for Diplomatic Relations:
Addressing the current state of India-Bangladesh relations, Shams reassured that the partnership remains on solid ground. While acknowledging occasional challenges, she maintained optimism about the future:
“The foundation of our relationship is strong. Certain issues might arise, but these are manageable and should not overshadow the overall progress we have made together.”
