Bangladesh’s Chief Election Commissioner, AMM Nasir Uddin, has promised to revive the voting rights of nearly 180 million people deprived of participating in free and fair elections. The Chief Election Commissioner made this announcement while speaking at the launching of a training program for election officials. He further added that this is a longstanding issue and EC is committed to addressing it.
The EC will introduce the voter list with a new door-to-door data collection operation that will kick off on 20 January, as part of its preparation activities for the imminent 13th National Election. Nasir Uddin labeled the EC’s mission as being a “marathon race, where transparency and credibility in electing the peoples’, representatives take center stage of the electoral race”.
The EC has also promised to probe allegations of irregularities in previous elections, especially those conducted under the rule of the Awami League in 2014, 2018, and 2024. The newly formed EC, which assumed office in November, has already started implementing reforms to enhance public confidence in the electoral process.
Interim Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus, who heads the caretaker government formed after Sheikh Hasina was ousted, said that the national elections might be held between late 2025 and mid-2026, depending on the completion of the update of the voter list.
