Maldives’ Minister of Foreign Affairs, Abdulla Khaleel, concluded his first official visit to India, signaling a significant advancement in bilateral ties between the two nations. During the visit, officials held high-level discussions and signed key agreements to bolster development cooperation.
Abdulla Khaleel met with India’s Minister of External Affairs, S Jaishankar, to review the broad spectrum of bilateral relations. Their discussions focused on exploring new areas of collaboration, particularly in development projects, infrastructure, and socio-economic initiatives. Abdulla Khaleel expressed his gratitude for India’s ongoing support in addressing the fiscal challenges faced by the Maldives, highlighting the importance of this partnership in promoting economic stability.
Signing the MoU
A notable highlight of the visit was the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on High Impact Community Development Projects (HICDP). This agreement marks the third phase of project-based cooperation between India and the Maldives. Also aimed at delivering tangible benefits to grassroots communities. This phase’s projects will enhance local infrastructure and improve livelihoods across the Maldives.
In addition to his diplomatic engagements, Abdulla Khaleel also visited the High Commission of Maldives in India, emphasizing the importance of continued collaboration between the two nations. The deep-rooted cultural, ethnic, and historical ties between India and Maldives have formed the foundation of their long-standing relationship. India was one of the first nations to recognize Maldives’ independence in 1965, and remained a key partner in its development journey.
Strengthens Ties with India
The bilateral relationship has been further solidified through high-profile visits. Including Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s attendance at President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih’s inauguration in 2018. Discussions during these interactions have consistently focused on addressing Maldives’ developmental priorities, particularly in healthcare, human resource development, and connectivity.
Khaleel’s visit underscores the commitment of both nations to strengthen their partnership and collaborate on initiatives that benefit their citizens. India and Maldives’ continued support and cooperation will drive sustainable development and foster regional stability.
