36 Lives Lost in 7.1 Magnitude Earthquake at Nepal-Tibet Border

A 7.1 magnitude earthquake struck the Nepal-Tibet border, killing 36 people and damaging many buildings. Tremors were felt across several regions in India, but no property damage has been reported there

A powerful earthquake with a magnitude of 7.1 struck Tibet near the Nepalese border today, resulting in 32 fatalities, according to Chinese media outlet Xinhua. The earthquake‘s tremors were also felt in various parts of India, including Bihar, Assam, and West Bengal.

Tectonic Activity in Nepal and Tibet

Nepal lies in a geologically active area where the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates collide, forming the Himalayas and causing frequent earthquakes. This is not the first time the region has been hit by a devastating earthquake; in 2015, a 7.8-magnitude quake killed nearly 9,000 people and injured over 22,000, while also destroying more than half a million homes.

Series of Aftershocks Recorded

The earthquake, which occurred at 6:35 AM, was followed by two additional aftershocks. The first aftershock had a magnitude of 4.7 and struck at 7:02 AM at a depth of 10 km. A third earthquake, measuring 4.9 in magnitude, occurred at 7:07 AM at a depth of 30 km.

Tremors Felt in India

The tremors were particularly strong in Bihar, where residents rushed outside their homes and apartments in fear. Fortunately, there have been no reports of property damage following the earthquake.
