Nearly a month post the fire incident at PGIMER, the Advanced Paediatric Centre (APC) has achieved a milestone by becoming the inaugural building on the campus to entirely relocate UPS batteries externally. Doctors have received directives to refrain from installing any UPS systems with their equipment or computers. Instead, these will be powered through ports linked to an external room housing the batteries.
Prof Arun Bansal, additional medical superintendent (AMS) at the APC, confirmed the removal of all previously installed external UPS systems and batteries from different areas within the APC. “We’ve shifted around three battery backups, each containing 100 batteries, outside the APC building. Now, we’re receiving electrical backup supply from this external setup,” Prof Bansal stated.
A significant fire had erupted in the computer room of Nehru Hospital’s C-Block on a Monday night. The fire’s origin was traced to a short circuit in the UPS room that housed over 100 batteries, leading to the ignition of the electric cables and extensive damage across five floors. Just one week following the C-Block incident, another fire emergency hit the institute, this time at the Advanced Eye Centre. Investigations revealed a similar cause – a short circuit within the UPS batteries.
