Khadoor Sahib MP Amritpal Singh has distanced himself from a statement made by his mother, Balwinder Kaur, regarding his stance on “Khalistan,” the secessionist idea for a separate Sikh nation. In a written statement issued by the jailed Sikh leader through his team on Saturday night, he clarified this position on the day of his oath-taking.

In response to a query from journalists on July 5, his mother said, “Amritpal Singh is not a supporter of Khalistan. Advocating for Punjab’s rights and working for the betterment of the youth does not make anyone a supporter of Khalistan. He contested the elections within the limits of the Indian constitution and has now taken an oath to the constitution. Therefore, he should not be labeled as such.”

On Saturday, Amritpal Singh’s statement also came up “When I discovered today the statement made by Mata ji yesterday, I felt deeply hurt. Even though I believe Mata Ji spoke unknowingly, such a statement should never come from my family or anyone who supports me”, it stated.

He stated, “Dreaming of Khalsa Raj is not only a right but also a matter of immense pride. Countless Sikhs have sacrificed their lives for this dream, and we cannot even think of retreating from this sacred path. I have often proclaimed from various platforms that if ever faced with a choice between the Panth and my family, I will always choose the Panth without hesitation.”

However, the issue of Khalistan was notably absent from the poll campaign of the Sikh leader, who was primarily projected as an anti-drug crusader and religious preacher.
