Union Home Minister Amit Shah has commended the Supreme Court’s validation of the decision to revoke Article 370, asserting that the verdict affirms the complete constitutional legitimacy of the government’s action.

In a statement on X, Shah welcomed the Court’s judgment endorsing the abolition of #Article370, emphasizing Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visionary step taken on August 5, 2019. He noted the restoration of peace, normalcy, and transformative growth in Jammu, Kashmir, and Ladakh post the abrogation. Shah credited the newfound prosperity in the tourism and agriculture sectors for elevating the residents’ living standards.

Highlighting the Supreme Court’s affirmation, Shah stated, “Today’s verdict confirms the constitutional validity of the decision to revoke #Article370.” He reiterated the detrimental impact of Article 370 on the region, citing increased corruption and hindrance to development.

During the presentation of the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation Bill, 2019, Shah had previously underscored how Article 370 negatively affected the people, impeding progress and perpetuating underdevelopment. He reiterated the belief that Article 370 served as a breeding ground for terrorism and was against the interests of women, Dalits, and development.

The Supreme Court, led by a five-judge Constitution bench including Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud, upheld the government’s decision and dismissed challenges against the abrogation. Chief Justice Chandrachud underscored that every decision made by the Centre on behalf of a State under proclamation couldn’t be legally challenged to avoid administrative standstills.

The Court emphasized Article 370 as a temporary provision, meant for Jammu and Kashmir’s integration, not disintegration, noting that the President could declare its cessation. Additionally, it directed the Election Commission to conduct Jammu and Kashmir Assembly elections by September 30, 2024, while urging the expeditious restoration of the region’s statehood.

The ruling party’s accolades for the Supreme Court’s validation reiterate the government’s commitment to Jammu, Kashmir, and Ladakh’s comprehensive development following the transformative Article 370 abrogation on August 5, 2019.
