Indian boxer Amit Panghal secured his spot in the Paris Olympics by defeating Chuang Liu of China in the 51kg quarterfinals of the 2nd World Qualification Tournament held on Sunday. Panghal’s 5-0 victory over Liu earned him a place in his second Olympic Games, making him the second male boxer from India to qualify after Nishant Dev.

Nishant secured his place in the Paris Olympics by defeating Moldova’s Cebotari in a unanimous 5-0 decision at the World Boxing Qualifiers on Friday. Despite facing setbacks in the selection process for the previous qualifying events, Panghal seized his opportunity to compete in the Paris Olympics.

Panghal showcased an aggressive performance in Round 2, impressing the judges with his relentless attack. In the deciding round, both boxers displayed frantic boxing, but Panghal’s strategic maneuvers and effective combinations ultimately secured him a unanimous victory.

With this achievement, Panghal joins Nishant, Nikhat Zareen, Preeti Pawar, and Lovlina Borgohain as the fifth Indian boxer to qualify for the Paris Olympics in different weight categories.

India has the opportunity to secure two more Paris Olympic berths, with Jaismine competing against Mali’s Marine Camara in the women’s 57kg quarterfinals, and Sachin Siwach facing Kyrgyzstan’s Munarbek Seiitbek Uul in the men’s 57kg category third place play-off to determine the quota winner.
