In a bid to combat air pollution in Mumbai, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has issued a Global Expression of Interest (EOI) on Friday, calling upon eligible entities such as companies and firms to participate in a “Cloud Seeding Program for Artificial Rain.” The initiative aims to employ suitable technologies over a three-year period. The EOI has been announced by the deputy chief engineer of the environment department.
The BMC specifically seeks applications from reputable firms or organizations with a history of engagement in similar work over the past three years. Interested parties can submit their applications until 5 pm on December 14.
This decision follows a directive from Chief Minister Eknath Shinde during a recent pollution review meeting to explore the potential of cloud seeding for artificial rain to mitigate dust pollution in Mumbai. While unseasonal rains recently improved the Air Quality Index (AQI) in Mumbai, civic officials remain cautious about the uncertainty in AQI over the coming months. As a precautionary measure, the BMC aims to keep the option of cloud seeding open to address any potential deterioration in air quality effectively.
The process of appointing an agency for cloud seeding is anticipated to take approximately three months. A BMC official emphasized the importance of selecting an agency with sufficient experience in similar endeavors to ensure effectiveness in combating air pollution.
