The Supreme Court’s recent verdict on the appointment of aldermen in the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has sparked reactions from major political parties, while Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav has criticized the BJP’s approach towards Muslims in Uttar Pradesh.

AAP and BJP React to Supreme Court Verdict

The Supreme Court upheld the Delhi lieutenant governor’s authority to appoint aldermen to the MCD without consulting the state cabinet. Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MP Sanjay Singh criticized the ruling, calling it “unfortunate” and a “big blow to democracy.” Singh argued that the decision contradicts democratic principles and the court’s earlier comments.

In response, the Delhi BJP accused AAP of consistently challenging the LG’s decisions and condemned Singh’s reaction as anarchistic. The Supreme Court clarified that the LG’s appointment of aldermen is a “statutory duty” not subject to the state cabinet’s advice.

Akhilesh Yadav Criticizes Yogi Adityanath

Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav attacked Uttar Pradesh chief minister Yogi Adityanath and the BJP’s stance on Muslims, labeling it as “undemocratic and unconstitutional.” Yadav suggested that a true ‘Yogi’ would respect the Constitution.

His comments were in response to the UP government’s actions in cases such as the Ayodhya gang rape, Hathras stampede, and Lucknow molestation incidents. Yadav defended his call for a DNA test in the Ayodhya case, stating it aligns with a 2023 law. He also condemned the BJP’s reported plans to amend the Waqf law, accusing them of undermining Muslim rights.
