Opposition disrupts Day 1 of monsoon session, PM calls it ‘anti-Dalit, woman’ mindset

The monsoon session of Parliament started from Monday amid the Covid-19 crisis, but due to the uproar of the Opposition, the proceedings of both the Houses of Parliament were adjourned till 11 am on Tuesday. Prime Minister Narendra Modi was not allowed to introduce new ministers in the Lok Sabha.

PM Modi started his address, and was trying to introduce new ministers, but the ruckus continued. Amidst the uproar, he said that it is a matter of happiness that many Dalit brothers have become ministers. “Many of our ministers have come from rural areas, but some people are not liking it.”

He said: “I was thinking that today there will be an atmosphere of enthusiasm in the House because a large number of women MPs, MPs from Dalit brothers, tribals, and farmers’ families got a chance. Keep appealing, but it did not get any special effect.” He kept on saying that this is not right. “Tradition should be followed in the House and introduction of new ministers should be allowed,” but the Opposition leaders kept raising slogans against the government.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Monday termed as sad and unfortunate the uproar by Congress members during the introduction of new ministers by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the Lok Sabha, saying he had not seen such a scene in Parliament in his 24 years of parliamentary life.

Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal, who interacted with the media, condemned the manner in which Opposition MPs behaved in the House. “We saw a very unfortunate situation, both in Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha. In Rajya Sabha, the address of the Chairman was interrupted too,” said Goyal. He noted that the old tradition of the Prime Minister introducing the new ministers to the rest of the MPs in the Parliament after a new Cabinet was formed or there was a reshuffle, was broken today for the first time because the Opposition MPs interrupted PM Modi.

“They could not see that such a large number of people from the backward community of the society have been inducted into the cabinet by the Prime Minister. For the first time, we saw such a large number of women, tribals, people from the northeast becoming a part of the union cabinet,” he said. Calling the interruption of the “democratic process” of the introduction of MPs as “unfortunate”, Goyal said, “It’s an insult to democracy and people of India.”

Due to the uproar, Lok Sabha was adjourned for the whole day after adjournment twice and Rajya Sabha thrice. As soon as the proceedings started in both the houses of Parliament, there was uproar over the issue of second wave of corona, inflation, matters related to China, espionage of journalists-politicians and population policy, due to which the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha were adjourned till 2 pm.

Then when the proceedings of the House started at 2 o’clock, the Opposition once again started a ruckus due to which the Lok Sabha had to be adjourned till 3.30 pm and the Rajya Sabha till 3 pm. After this, the proceedings of the Rajya Sabha resumed at 3 pm and the Lok Sabha at 3.30 pm, but this time also, the Opposition started a ruckus, due to which the proceedings of both the Houses were adjourned till 11 am on Tuesday. WITH AGENCY INPUTS
