The Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM) has been under construction since 2005. After numerous delays—from political unrest to pandemics—its opening is finally set for November 1, 2025
At 50 hectares, GEM will be the world’s largest museum devoted to a single civilization, housing over 100,000 ancient Egyptian artifacts
Exhibits include a colossal statue of Ramses II, immersive historical galleries, and, for the first time, the complete collection of Tutankhamun’s treasures on display under one roof
In October 2024, GEM partially opened for a trial run, welcoming limited crowds and showcasing 12 exhibit halls, a grand staircase, and the spectacular Grand Hall
Designed by Heneghan Peng Architects (Ireland), GEM features a striking pharaonic façade aligned with the pyramids, vast atrium spaces, and state-of-the-art interactive technology
Egypt expects GEM to attract 5 million visitors annually, giving tourism a much-needed boost and spotlighting the country’s rich cultural legacy
The inauguration was postponed from its initial July 2025 date due to regional tensions, including the Israel–Iran conflict, before finalizing the November 1 launch
Once fully operational, GEM will include permanent and temporary galleries, a children’s museum, conservation labs, and immersive tech—placing it at the forefront of global museum innovation
