U.S. President Donald Trump announced sharp tariffs on Indian goods, accusing New Delhi of profiting from discounted Russian oil amid the ongoing Ukraine conflict
Washington imposed a 25% tariff on Indian imports, citing national security concerns and punishing India for its continued energy relationship with Moscow
India rejected Trump’s accusations, calling them unfair and politically motivated. Officials defended Russian oil imports as legitimate economic decisions based on market needs
India pointed out that the U.S. and EU also import resources from Russia, accusing them of hypocrisy while pressuring India to halt energy purchases
Russia condemned the U.S. tariffs, branding them as neocolonial tools designed to control sovereign nations and suppress emerging powers like India
In her statement, Russia's Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said, "Sanctions and restrictions have unfortunately become a defining feature of the current historical period"
"Unable to accept the erosion of its dominance in an emerging multipolar international order, Washington continues to pursue a neocolonial agenda," she continued
Russia praised India’s resistance to American pressure, stressing the importance of Global South solidarity and deeper ties through platforms like BRICS
