Mathura Sridharan has been named Ohio’s 12th Solicitor General by Attorney General Dave Yost, following her predecessor’s elevation to a federal post
She will serve as Ohio’s top appellate attorney, representing the state in major cases before the U.S. Supreme Court, Sixth Circuit, and Ohio Supreme Court
Sridharan holds a J.D. from NYU Law, a Master’s in EECS from MIT, and dual bachelor’s degrees in EECS and economics from MIT. She clerked for courts in New York and argued at the Supreme Court in Ohio v. EPA (2023)
Before taking her current role, she directed Ohio’s Tenth Amendment Center, defending state sovereignty in federal legal matters
Her appointment was met with xenophobic and racist trolling, with critics attacking her ethnic heritage and traditional attire like the bindi
Attorney General Dave Yost publicly defended her, stressing that she is a U.S. citizen, with full qualifications to serve Ohioans. He stated: “If her name or complexion bother you, the issue lies with the critics—not her”
Her appointment highlights growing diversity in U.S. legal institutions while also drawing attention to cultural intolerance. It marks a notable milestone for immigrants in government legal leadership
