STRATEGIC SRINAGAR-LEH HIGHWAY OPENED BY BRO IN RECORD TIME

Srinagar: In a record time of 58 days, BRO has cleared heavy snow on Srinagar-Zojila road allowing the truck loads to pass with essential items to Kargil and Leh from Srinagar.

Srinagar-Leh highway used to remain closed for months together as the heavy snow covered the stretch from Sonamarg to Zojila Pass. In order to keep the supplies ready for the people and for the army especially in the backdrop of standoff with Chinese army in eastern Ladakh, BRO pressed a huge number of workers and machinery to clear the snow in record short time. Border Roads Organization (BRO) spokesman told the media in Sonamarg that the highway is officially open for the traffic and initially they will allow all the truck loads of essential items to pass through Zojila into the union territory of Ladakh.

DG of BRO Lt Gen Rajeev Chaudhary officially opened Srinagar-Leh highway and appreciated engineers and all the workers for making it happen while on the day of opening there was fresh snowfall on the Zojila Pass.

The Union government has not only started massive works in the villages of Ladakh but they have also started the work on the Zojila tunnel in order to make this Srinagar-Leh highway a fair weather road for all the seasons. In the past, Srinagar-Leh highway used to remain closed for more than six months and this is for the first time that BRO has cleared the road within 58 days despite the fact that Sonamarg-Zojila stretch witnessed a series of heavy snowfalls during the current winter.
