The U.S. State Department issued a travel warning on March 31, 2025, advising American tourists about increased crime rates and several swimming, boating, and firearms-related safety threats. The warning points out that violent crimes like armed robberies, burglaries, and sexual assaults are common, especially in major cities like Nassau and Freeport on New Providence and Grand Bahama islands.
Visitors are being asked to steer clear of the “Over the Hill” neighborhood in Nassau, which is a common place tied to crime.
Public Spaces and Rental Properties That Aren’t Safe
The notice warns that those zones outside tourist havens, particularly rental facilities with no private security, represent severe safety hazards. It asks travelers to exercise care, even if they have a seemingly secure stay. Boating and Jet Ski Activities Create Safety Issues of Greatest Concern
Bahamian boating is unregulated, resulting in a past history of accidents and deaths, the advisory says. Travelers are cautioned by reports of sexual assaults perpetrated by jet ski operators. Because of these incidents, U.S. government employees are prohibited from operating jet skis and watercraft rented from individual vendors, particularly near Paradise Island.
The advisory states, “Watercraft are being handled by unlicensed handlers, which is not safe,” underlining the dangers of insufficiently regulated services.
Beach Safety and Shark Attack Warnings Issued
In as much as water sports, the warning informs tourists of dangers during snorkeling and swimming, especially at Nassau beaches. It reports, “Swimmers and snorkelers have died after overestimating their physical fitness or health.” A concern is also rising over shark attacks, causing beach users to exercise extreme care.
Strict Gun Laws Might Result in Arrests
The Bahamas strictly regulates firearms and ammunition. Tourists are advised that even involuntary possession of bullets or firearms may lead to arrest, fines, or imprisonment. “Police strictly enforce these laws—even at the airport when travelers are leaving,” the advisory says.
Safety Guidelines for Visitors
The advisory contains a list of travel tips to assist in the protection of U.S. citizens traveling to the Bahamas. These are locking doors and windows, not resisting robbery, and carefully screening luggage for guns or ammunition prior to travel.
Tourists are also urged to register with the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP), read the Traveler’s Checklist, and visit the CDC’s website for current health guidelines. The warning ends by sending tourists to the country information page for additional information.
Through this revised warning, the U.S. government reiterates the need for awareness and readiness among Americans traveling to the Bahamas.
