New FASTag Rules from February 17: What Changes and How to Avoid Issues

The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) has introduced new FASTag rules, effective February 17, 2025. These changes aim to make toll payments smoother and prevent fraud.

Key FASTag Rule Changes

Blacklisted FASTags Won’t Work

If a FASTag is blacklisted, the toll payment will not be processed. Payments will also fail if the tag was blacklisted at least 10 minutes before scanning.

70-Minute Grace Period

Users now have 70 minutes to fix their FASTag status before reaching a toll booth. This helps avoid payment failures.

Double Toll for Blacklisted FASTags

If a FASTag gets blacklisted at the toll, users must pay double the toll amount. However, if they recharge within 10 minutes, they can request a penalty refund.

Extra Charges for Delayed Transactions

If a toll transaction is processed more than 15 minutes after a vehicle crosses the toll, users may have to pay additional charges.

Chargebacks After 15 Days

Banks can only raise chargebacks for incorrect deductions due to blacklisted or low-balance FASTags after a 15-day waiting period.

How to Avoid FASTag Issues

To prevent problems, follow these steps:

  • Maintain Sufficient Balance: Ensure your FASTag wallet has enough funds.
  • Check FASTag Status Regularly: Keep your tag active to avoid blacklisting.
  • Monitor Transactions: Look out for delays in deductions.
  • Stay Updated on FASTag Activity: Prevent rejection due to inactivity.

By following these steps, you can avoid unnecessary penalties and travel hassle-free.
