The initiative, led by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, seeks to provide citizens with easier access to public services, welfare programs, and official resources.
Government’s Plan and Industry Collaboration
According to reports, the Indian government has approached leading tech firms, including Google, Apple, and smartphone manufacturers, to support the project. The proposal includes making the GOV.in app store available for download via Google Play and Apple’s App Store. Additionally, authorities have urged smartphone makers to pre-install the app suite on devices before they hit the market, ensuring wider accessibility.
By consolidating government services into one platform, the initiative aims to improve user experience and encourage greater engagement with public sector apps.
Opposition from Tech Giants
Despite the government’s push, the proposal has reportedly met resistance from industry leaders. Google, which dominates India’s smartphone market through its Android operating system, has expressed concerns about the initiative. Similarly, Apple is reluctant to comply, citing its strict policies regarding app distribution and revenue-sharing models. Both companies currently charge a 30% commission on app revenue, and the introduction of a government-backed store could disrupt their business models and reduce their market control.
Government’s Firm Stand
In response to the resistance, Indian authorities have signaled a willingness to take legal action if necessary. This firm stance follows previous measures against global tech firms, including the 2020 ban on TikTok and ongoing legal disputes with Meta (formerly Facebook) over encryption policies.
India’s demand for compliance is not without precedent. In 2021, Apple allowed Russian users to install government-approved apps to meet local regulations. The Indian government appears determined to implement a similar system, albeit on a much larger scale.
