US President Donald Trump unveiled a major investment to build artificial intelligence infrastructure through a new initiative called Stargate on Tuesday. This joint venture involves OpenAI, SoftBank, and Oracle. According to Trump, the project will invest at least $500 billion into AI infrastructure in the United States.
“This monumental undertaking is a resounding declaration of confidence in America’s potential,” Trump said, just after his inauguration as the 47th President. Notably, OpenAI’s CEO Sam Altman, SoftBank’s Masayoshi Son, and Oracle’s Larry Ellison were present for the announcement.
What is the Stargate Project?
The Stargate Project is a new initiative aimed at building AI infrastructure in the U.S. OpenAI, SoftBank, and Oracle are leading the venture. To begin, SoftBank will invest $100 billion upfront, with a commitment to up to $500 billion over the next four years. This massive investment aims to ensure American leadership in AI, generate jobs, and provide economic benefits globally. Additionally, the project will support U.S. re-industrialization and enhance national security.
Key Partners and Investments
SoftBank and OpenAI are the principal contributors. Specifically, SoftBank will manage the financial side, while OpenAI will oversee operations. Furthermore, Masayoshi Son has been appointed as the chairman of the project. Alongside them, Oracle and MGX are also contributing equity. Other major companies such as Arm, Microsoft, and NVIDIA will handle the technology aspects.
Project Launch and Expansion
The project is beginning in Texas, and OpenAI is currently exploring additional sites across the country. Meanwhile, Oracle, NVIDIA, and OpenAI will work together to build and operate the AI computing system. This collaboration builds on OpenAI’s long-standing partnership with NVIDIA and its newer relationship with Oracle.
