With 5/5—including a hat-trick—debutant left-arm spinner Vaishnavi Sharma delivered a magnificent performance as India swept Malaysia totally aside ten runs in a rather one-sided U19 Women’s T20 World Cup game on Tuesday. The game ended under 18 overs.
As Malaysia was knocked out for a paltry 31 runs in 14.3 overs, Vaishnavi&’s phenomenal streak broke a fresh match record. Helping me ensure a complete collapse of the batting line of Malaysia, fellow spinner Ayushi Shukla provided me with 3/8.
Just 2.5 overs -India reached 32/0 by G Trisha’s unstoppable 27 off 12 strikes, including five fours, chasing down the target easily.
Though Malaysia&31 was a sorry total, it just missed from being lowest in T20I history, a mark Maldives and Mali both achieved with 6. The Ivory Coast ranks first for men’s teams with a combined score of 7 against Nigeria.
India now tops their group with four points and a better Net Run Rate of +9.1 compared to Sri Lanka’s +5.5.
Vaishnavi’s amazing spell on a track giving considerable turn and bounce was the basis of India’s win. With her skill, she left Malaysia’s batters lost against their conditions. She scored three times in the fourteenth over, when Malaysia plummeted from 24/6 to 30/9. Among those she killed were Nur Ain Binti Roslan, Nur Isma Dania, and Siti Nazwah.
Vaishnavi reflected on her dream début: “This would be a dream debut to pick a hat-trick and a five-wicket haul.” There have been ups and downs in my trip. I admire Ravindra Jadeja and Radha Yadav. Last evening, I had seen ways to get wickets here.”
