A heartwarming story from China has swept the social media with a love story of a couple whose romance dates back to their kindergarten days. The newly married couple was seen revealing that they had once acted as husband and wife in a kindergarten play twenty years ago, SCMP said.

The groom, surnamed Zheng, and his wife, whose name has not been made public, exchanged their vows on January 7 in Chaozhou, Guangdong province. What brought them to the attention of the internet is their shared past: though in different grades, they had pretended to be newlyweds during a school gala performance 20 years ago.

In a remixed video that emerged from the play, the teenage bride and groom were dressed up in a shimmering wedding dress and a tuxedo, and complete with layers of heavy makeup. The backdrop displayed a large cartoon image of the boy and girl holding hands and other children served as bridesmaids and groomsmen.

After kindergarten, Zheng and his kindergarten “bride” attended separate primary schools and lost touch. However, in 2022, their paths crossed again when Zheng’s kindergarten classmates shared the old video. Zheng’s mother, after seeing the footage, suggested reconnecting with the girl. With help from a kindergarten teacher, Zheng reached out to her.

Zheng and his girlfriend, being both single back then, developed a close tie and regretted not reconnecting earlier. That love story brought them together where they eventually wedded, pleasing millions on social media in Chinese.

The story received 76 million views on one platform alone, and netizens just can’t get over the story. “They should give the teacher a red envelope containing a hefty amount of money, haha,” one user jokingly wrote. Another said, “What magical karma! They are meant to be together.

Kindergarten activities go viral in China. In 2023, there was a story about a Jiangsu province nursery hosting a wedding ceremony for two pet rabbits invited by children to come and be present. It also featured a wedding banquet and gifts; it amazed kids and netizens alike.
