Dangerous Arctic Blast Sweeps Across U.S. East Coast, Affecting Millions

A major winter storm is impacting millions along the East Coast. Heavy snow and dangerously cold temperatures are expected. Winter storm warnings are in effect for parts of the Mid-Atlantic and New England. As a result, some areas could see up to 10 inches of snow.

Large Cities Affected

Philadelphia, New York, and Boston are facing several inches of snow. Additionally, the storm will affect up to 70 million people. Hazardous road conditions will develop across the I-95 corridor. Consequently, roads that aren’t cleared will remain dangerous through Monday morning.

Flight Disruptions

The snowfall has already caused flight cancellations and delays. Nearly 130 flights were canceled at New York airports, and around 90 others were delayed. Furthermore, Washington, D.C. and Boston airports also experienced delays.

Mayor’s Warning for NYC

In New York City, Mayor Eric Adams urged residents to take public transport. He also reminded people to check on vulnerable neighbors. He stated, “Cold temperatures, high winds tomorrow, could be dangerous.” Thus, residents should be cautious and prepared for the harsh weather.

New Jersey Declares State of Emergency

New Jersey’s governor declared a state of emergency. Northern parts of the state are expected to receive 6 to 8 inches of snow. Moreover, warming centers will open to protect residents from the cold.

Extreme Cold and Wind

Much of the Eastern Seaboard will face cold temperatures this week. Wind chills in parts of North Dakota and Minnesota already reached minus 40°F. Temperatures will remain in the teens and 20s across the central and eastern U.S. through Tuesday. As a result, this cold snap is expected to impact travel and daily activities.

Wintry Mix for the South

The South will also face snow, sleet, and freezing rain. As many as 30 million people will be affected. Texas, Louisiana, and Florida will experience winter conditions starting Monday night. Specifically, northern Louisiana and Mississippi could experience heavy snow, while Houston and Mobile, Alabama, will see a mix of snow, sleet, and freezing rain.

State of Emergency in Louisiana

Louisiana has declared a state of emergency. Governor Jeff Landry urged residents to prepare for the storm. Consequently, everyone should stay alert and follow the latest forecasts.
