‘I Have Rudraksh…’: Sanjay Roy’s Defense in RG Kar Rape-Murder Case During Kolkata Court Trial

In the heartbreaking RG Kar Hospital rape-murder case, the Kolkata court on Saturday declared Sanjay Roy guilty of raping and murdering a 31-year-old doctor.

Prior to the verdict being revealed, Roy strongly denied his participation, consistently asserting, “They are framing me… They are framing me, Sir. ” He additionally claimed that the “actual criminals are roaming free” and contended that he could not have carried out the crime because of the rudraksh mala he was wearing, stating that if he had been the perpetrator, the necklace would have broken.

After the court’s ruling, Roy was observed crying as he was led out of the courtroom. Sources indicated that Roy had been quiet in his lock-up the day before, only speaking when his lawyer met with him.

The judge, while delivering the ruling, highlighted the gravity of Roy‘s conduct, referencing forensic evidence that connected his DNA to both the crime scene and the victim. The judge remarked, “And the manner in which you throttled the victim, you can receive death or imprisonment,” and noted that Section 64 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) requires a minimum of 10 years of imprisonment for rape, while Section 66 imposes a penalty of 25 years, life imprisonment, or the death penalty.

The final sentencing is set for Monday.

On August 9, 2024, the alarming discovery of a postgraduate medical trainee’s body in a hospital seminar room caused upheaval throughout India. Sanjay Roy, a civic volunteer with the Kolkata Police, was apprehended shortly after the incident.
