Star India batsman Virat Kohli has been added to the Delhi Ranji squad for the upcoming matches, although his availability will determine his participation, as per sources from the Delhi and District Cricket Association (DDCA). While Kohli is not anticipated to take part in the first match against Saurashtra beginning on January 23 in Rajkot, he might join the team for the second match against Railways starting January 30.

Kohli’s inclusion follows the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) implementing a stricter policy concerning the involvement of international players in domestic cricket. This policy, which was announced on Thursday, requires that players must participate in domestic matches to stay eligible for selection in the national team and maintain their central contracts. The BCCI also noted that exceptions to this policy would only be considered in special circumstances and would need approval from the Chairman of the Selection Committee.

“Participation in Domestic Matches is essential for players to remain eligible for selection in the national team and for central contracts, according to BCCI guidelines. This policy ensures that players maintain a relationship with the domestic cricket scene, fostering talent cultivation, upholding match fitness, and enhancing the overall domestic framework. It also motivates emerging players by giving them chances to compete alongside top cricketers, guaranteeing continuity in talent advancement. Any exceptions to this requirement will be recognized only in exceptional circumstances and will necessitate formal notification and approval from the Chairman of the Selection Committee, ensuring fairness and transparency in the process,” the BCCI expressed.

Kohli’s anticipated participation in the Ranji Trophy would mark his first appearance since 2012 when he played against Uttar Pradesh. If he participates, it could be crucial for restoring his form, which has been questioned after a challenging period in international cricket. Last year, Kohli accumulated only 655 runs in international matches, averaging 21. 83. His performance in the World Test Championship 2023-25 cycle included gathering 751 runs in 14 matches, with an average of 32. 65.

Virat Kohli’s potential return to the Ranji Trophy would significantly enhance Delhi’s performance as they currently occupy the fourth position in their group.
