Salary Boost Alert: 8th Pay Commission Approved, Who Will Benefit And What’s Next?

The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved the setting up of the 8th Pay Commission for revising the salaries of central government employees and pensions of retired personnel. Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw confirmed the development on Thursday.

Benefits for Employees and Pensioners

The decision will directly impact over 49 lakh central government employees, including defence personnel, and nearly 65 lakh pensioners. According to unnamed sources cited by PTI, the revision will lead to a salary hike, improving the financial well-being of employees and pensioners alike.

The previous, 7th Pay Commission, established in 2016, is set to complete its term in 2026. By initiating the process for the 8th Pay Commission ahead of schedule, the government aims to provide ample time for recommendations and implementation.

Government’s Statement on the Commission

“The 8th Pay Commission will improve the quality of life for employees and boost overall consumption,” PM Modi stated in a post on X (formerly Twitter). The commission’s chairman and two members will be appointed soon, with consultations planned across central and state governments and other stakeholders to ensure an inclusive approach.

Broader Implications

The decision comes at a strategic time, ahead of the Union Budget presentation on February 1 and the Delhi Assembly elections on February 5. In Delhi alone, approximately four lakh employees, including state government workers and defence personnel, stand to benefit from this move.

The establishment of the 8th Pay Commission marks a step towards enhancing financial security for millions of government employees and retirees, reaffirming the government’s commitment to their welfare.
