Despite worries about the readiness of its venues, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is resolute that the ICC Champions Trophy will remain in Pakistan. The three key venues – Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore, National Stadium in Karachi, and Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium – were scheduled for completion by December 31, with the ICC anticipated to take control by February 12, a week prior to the start of the tournament. Nevertheless, delays have left the venues significantly unprepared, increasing the likelihood of moving the event to the UAE, where India’s matches are planned to occur in Dubai.
A PCB insider highlighted that the ICC’s continuous oversight, with a large delegation monitoring broadcasting, hospitality, and event operations, signifies that the tournament is still progressing as planned. “The PCB has invested almost PKR 12 billion enhancing our stadiums to render them suitable for an event like the Champions Trophy, which was granted to us,” stated the insider.
The PCB released a statement to counter misleading media claims that had questioned the event’s readiness, asserting that such conjecture could lead to confusion and disruption. “The stadium’s work is being meticulously supervised by the PCB, and they will be prepared to host the CT matches on schedule,” the insider confirmed.
The ICC delegation present in Pakistan has not yet voiced any concerns regarding the preparations. The tournament is scheduled to commence on February 19, featuring defending champions Pakistan against New Zealand in Karachi. India, citing security and political concerns, will conduct all their matches in Dubai.
