US President Joe Biden is scheduled to hold a virtual meeting with leaders from Japan and the Philippines this week, the White House said on Wednesday. The meeting will take place as cooperation between the three nations is growing in the South China Sea.

In December, the Philippines, United States, and Japan conducted a “maritime cooperative activity” within the exclusive economic zone of the Philippines in the South China Sea. It is part of efforts to further strengthen regional security and military relationships.

The virtual summit marks another instance of continuing cooperation between countries as they respond to security issues in the Indo-Pacific region amidst heightened tensions in the South China Sea.
