Former U.S. President Donald Trump wasted no time in reacting to Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s resignation on Monday. Taking to Truth Social, Trump reignited his controversial idea of Canada becoming the 51st state of the U.S., claiming many Canadians would welcome such a move.
“Many people in Canada LOVE being the 51st State,” Trump wrote. “If Canada merged with the U.S., there would be no tariffs, taxes would drop significantly, and they’d be TOTALLY SECURE from Russian and Chinese threats surrounding them.”
Trump further claimed Trudeau stepped down due to U.S. economic pressures, specifically the looming threat of a 25% tariff on Canadian goods.
Trudeau Resigns Amid Declining Support
After nearly a decade in power, Justin Trudeau announced his resignation, citing waning voter support as a key reason. While speculation about his political future had been mounting, Trump’s re-election in November 2024 reportedly accelerated Trudeau’s decision.
Trump’s stance on U.S.-Canada trade relations, including his push to impose tariffs, had stoked economic concerns in Canada. A November meeting between Trudeau and Trump at Mar-a-Lago failed to resolve tensions. Trump, in his trademark style, joked about making Canada the 51st U.S. state and dubbed Trudeau its “governor.”
Trump Certified as 2024 Election Winner
Meanwhile, Donald Trump was officially certified as the winner of the 2024 U.S. presidential election on Monday. In a Congressional session attended by Vice President Kamala Harris, Trump secured 312 electoral votes, surpassing Harris’s 226 votes. The certification paves the way for Trump to reclaim the White House, with no objections raised to the election results.
Trump’s win and his assertive stance on international trade have reignited discussions about the U.S.’s role in shaping global economic policies.
