Abdul Rehman Makki, the deputy chief of the banned Jamaat-ud-Dawa (JuD) and brother-in-law of alleged Mumbai attacks mastermind Hafiz Saeed, died of a heart attack in Lahore on Friday. According to JuD officials, Makki had been suffering from health issues, including high diabetes, and was receiving treatment at a private hospital in the city.
“Makki suffered a cardiac arrest early this morning and he breathed his last in the hospital,” a JuD official told PTI.
Makki had been relatively low-profile since being sentenced to six months in prison for terror financing by an anti-terrorism court in 2020. In 2023, he was designated as a global terrorist by the United Nations, which imposed an assets freeze, travel ban, and arms embargo against him.
The Pakistan Mutahida Muslim League (PMML) released a statement describing Makki as an advocate of Pakistan’s ideology, reflecting on his controversial legacy within the context of terrorism and extremism in the region.
