Leader of Opposition Tikaram Julie attended the Congress Working Committee meeting in Belgaum, Karnataka, participated in the event celebrating the 100th anniversary of Nava Satyagraha, The Congress party is set to hold a two-day extended session of its highest decision-making body, the Congress Working Committee (CWC), beginning Thursday in Belagavi, Karnataka. The session will coincide with a rally and events marking the 100th anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi’s leadership at the historic 1924 Congress session in Belgaum (now Belagavi).
This session will bring together prominent Congress leaders, including party president Mallikarjun Kharge, Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, members of the CWC, and chief ministers from various states. They are expected to discuss the party’s ‘short and medium-term action plans’ for the future.
The first day’s session will be held at Veera Soudha, the same venue where the 1924 Congress session was conducted, while the second day will feature the unveiling of a Mahatma Gandhi statue at the Karnataka state assembly, Suvarna Vidhana Soudha, in Belagavi, a tribute sanctioned by the Karnataka government.
The Congress will also organize a rally titled ‘Jai Bhim, Jai Samvidhan,’ where Kharge, Rahul Gandhi, Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, and state Congress chief DK Shivakumar will address the crowd. The rally is expected to be a significant event in the region.
The historical context of the Belgaum session is significant in India’s freedom movement. In 1924, the session was led by Mahatma Gandhi, who outlined his vision for India’s future, emphasizing the importance of non-violence, communal harmony, and swaraj (self-rule).
Gandhi’s leadership during this session helped define the direction of the Indian National Congress and the broader struggle for independence, inspiring millions of Indians to join the freedom movement. The Congress party’s choice to celebrate this centenary underscores its commitment to the ideals of Gandhi and the foundational principles of India’s independence movement.
This extended session and rally are expected to reaffirm the Congress party’s unity and its focus on strengthening its leadership for future electoral challenges
